The Karachi Traffic Police is preparing new regulations that will require all rickshaws operating in the city to be fitted with fare meters, as part of broader efforts to improve transport regulation and road safety.
Speaking at the Karachi Press Club, DIG Traffic Karachi Pir Muhammad Shah said the department is also working on a plan to gradually remove Qingqi rickshaws from major roads to ease congestion and improve traffic flow.
Relief Planned for E-Challan Issues
The DIG acknowledged complaints from motorists regarding the e-challan system, noting that fines are generated automatically, which can occasionally result in errors. He said a new policy is being developed to address these concerns and provide relief where necessary.
Despite the challenges, Pir Muhammad Shah said the introduction of lane markings and the e-challan system has contributed to better traffic management across Karachi.
Heavy Vehicle Accidents Remain a Concern
The traffic chief revealed that 164 people lost their lives in accidents involving heavy vehicles in Karachi last year, underscoring the need for stricter traffic enforcement and safety measures.
He also disclosed that official records show around 45,000 vehicles in the city are still registered in the names of previous owners. According to the DIG, action has already been taken against several individuals in connection with the issue, with some cases being referred to the police for further legal proceedings.
