LAHORE: The Lahore Development Authority (LDA) has started new upgrade work on nine major underpasses. The project covers underpasses along Canal Bank Road, from Thokar Niaz Baig to Mall Road. The work includes road repairs, asphalt laying and improvements to road signs.
The latest work follows an earlier renovation project. Around Rs. 300 million was spent on upgrading the same nine underpasses. The Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency (TEPA) carried out the previous project. It replaced the old wall tiles with a rock-style finish. Officials had expected the new finish to last longer and reduce maintenance costs.
However, parts of the earlier work deteriorated within a few years. Some decorative lights installed during the project were also stolen. Authorities later repainted several underpasses. This raised concerns about the durability of the previous renovation work.
The nine underpasses include Doctor’s Hospital, Jinnah Hospital and Punjab University. Other locations are Muslim Town, Ferozepur Road, FC College, Jail Road, Mall Road and Dharampura. These underpasses serve several busy routes across Lahore and handle significant daily traffic.
The LDA Engineering Wing reviewed the progress during a recent meeting. LDA Director General Tahir Farooq chaired the meeting. Officials briefed him on the ongoing restoration work along Canal Bank Road.
The current work includes asphalt laying and road signage improvements. Workers are also carrying out other repair and restoration activities. The LDA aims to improve the condition of the underpasses and surrounding road infrastructure.
Tahir Farooq directed the engineering teams to maintain high construction standards. He also stressed the use of durable materials. The authority is focusing on quality to help ensure that the upgraded facilities remain in good condition for a longer period.
