LWMC to Revive Waste-to-energy Project at Lakhodair
Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) has decided to revive the decades-old waste-derived coal manufacturing project after the firm, with whom the contract was signed in 2011 in this regard, approached the authorities concerned with a request to ensure provision of moisture-free waste to its Refuse Derived Fuel Plant at Lakhodair — Lahore’s primary waste dump.

According to the Managing Director of LWMC, Ms. Rafia Haider, the company will deliver 1,000 tons of waste each day to the company for waste-to-energy purposes, which will also assist minimize landfill waste.
On the other side, the LWMC has begun attempts to implement its old proposal for a waste-to-energy project that has been pending for a long time.
In August of 2018, the then-Punjab government requested the LWMC to expeditiously finish the legal procedures required prior to the commencement of civil construction at Lakhodair for Pakistan’s first 40MW waste-to-energy plant, which was to be launched by a Chinese consortium.

According to the plan, the project’s civil construction was to begin in 2019, following the completion of electrical and mechanical work within two years, by April 2021. However, the idea reportedly failed to materialize due to administrative and functional challenges that arose later on.
