Electricity consumers across Pakistan, including customers of K-Electric, could soon receive major relief in power bills as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) reviews a proposed quarterly tariff adjustment for the January to March 2026 period.

During a public hearing held on Tuesday, NEPRA examined petitions submitted by electricity distribution companies seeking adjustments based on reduced operational costs. Initial estimates suggest consumers may benefit from a reduction of nearly Rs. 1.93 per unit in electricity tariffs, translating into overall relief of approximately Rs. 63.94 billion over three months.

According to officials, the proposed adjustment reflects significant savings in multiple areas of the power sector. Capacity charges reportedly decreased by Rs. 36.83 billion during the quarter, while use-of-system charges and market operation fees declined by Rs. 11.24 billion. Another Rs. 23.51 billion reduction has been requested due to incremental energy units.

Representatives from the industrial sector welcomed the potential cut, calling it a positive development for consumers and businesses amid ongoing uncertainty in global energy markets. Participants at the hearing urged authorities to continue transferring any cost savings directly to consumers in order to support economic activity and industrial growth.

Industrialist Tanveer Bari described the expected Rs. 1.93 per unit reduction as encouraging and stressed the need for further reforms to improve efficiency across the power sector.

Stakeholders also discussed broader structural changes within Pakistan’s electricity system. They noted that several outdated power plants are gradually being phased out while newer generation facilities continue to come online.

However, concerns were raised regarding the gap between Pakistan’s installed generation capacity and actual electricity production. Participants observed that while the country currently has around 45,000 megawatts of installed capacity, real generation remains close to 25,000 megawatts, highlighting issues related to planning, utilization, and demand management.

NEPRA is expected to announce its final decision after completing consultations with stakeholders and reviewing all submitted figures and recommendations.
