Mega-Projects in Karachi: Sindh Government Releases Rs 1.62 Bn
By the end of the first week of June, the Sindh government has disbursed 1.62 billion rupees for megaprojects in Karachi, out of a total budget allocation of 1.94 billion rupees for the current fiscal year. The amount of funds utilised was Rs 1.22 billion, which represented 63% of the overall allotment and 74% of the amount distributed to date.

The most recent numbers from the provincial administration indicate that the amount disbursed represents 85 percent of the total budget. The Sindh government allotted funding under a separate heading titled “giant development projects of Karachi,” however the sum was insignificant for the city’s population.
The usage of money improved in the third and fourth quarters of the fiscal year, whereas it was slow at the beginning of the year.
According to the budget execution report of the Sindh government for the period under review, the entire budget allocation of Rs 1.94 billion has been allocated to 18 ongoing development schemes – projects that had been approved in previous budgets – and one new scheme for which a meagre Rs 9 million has been allocated.

In addition, it includes the widening and reconstruction of the Stadium Road, the rehabilitation and improvement of roads in the areas surrounding Lea Market, the widening of the bridge over Orangi Nullah near the Habib Bank Chowrangi, the construction of a SWD from the Star Gate to Chakora Nullah on Shahrah-e-Faisal, and the rehabilitation and reconstruction of a road from the Jam Sadiq Bridge to Dawood Chowrangi.
