An opposition Member of the National Assembly (MNA) took a swipe at the proposed Telecom Infrastructure Bill, suggesting that the first telecom tower under the new framework should be installed at IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja’s residence.
The remark was made during a parliamentary debate on legislation that would allow telecom operators to install infrastructure on private property. In a sarcastic comment, the lawmaker argued that if the proposed rules are implemented, the initiative should begin from the minister’s own home.
The statement drew laughter from members across the House during the session.
The proposed legislation, which has already been approved by the National Assembly, is currently awaiting consideration in the Senate. The bill has sparked debate due to concerns surrounding private property rights and the extent of regulatory authority granted to telecom operators.
Under the proposed law, property owners who refuse permission for telecom infrastructure installation could face penalties of up to Rs. 50 million.
Critics argue that the bill requires further review to balance the expansion of telecom services with the protection of property owners’ rights.
