Karachi: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has intensified its investigation into the alleged Lyari Expressway plot scam by sealing 20 residential houses and an under-construction commercial plaza in Karachi. The action forms part of an ongoing inquiry into suspected illegal land allotments and fraudulent property transactions linked to the Lyari Expressway Resettlement Project.
According to NAB, the resettlement scheme was established to provide plots to families displaced by the construction of the Lyari Expressway. However, investigators allege that certain officials, in collaboration with property dealers, created fake records and unlawfully transferred plots to ineligible individuals. These plots were later sold, resulting in financial losses for the rightful beneficiaries of the project.
During the latest operation, NAB officials, supported by the district administration, sealed multiple residential properties and a commercial plaza that were allegedly developed on land currently under investigation. Authorities also claim that some welfare and amenity plots, originally reserved for public facilities, were illegally occupied and used for unauthorized construction and commercial activities.
Investigators further allege that proceeds from the fraudulent transactions were used to acquire nearly 25 acres of land in Thatta, in what is believed to be an attempt to convert illegally obtained funds into legitimate assets. NAB has stated that the investigation remains ongoing and that further legal action will be taken if additional evidence emerges.
The case has once again highlighted the importance of conducting proper due diligence before investing in real estate. Property experts recommend that buyers verify ownership documents, approved layouts, land records, and the legal status of a property through the relevant government authorities before completing any transaction.
NAB has also appealed to members of the public who possess information or relevant documents related to the case to cooperate with the investigation. The bureau reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public assets, recovering unlawfully acquired properties where possible, and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable under the law.
