Pakistan is Getting a National Public Health University Soon
During an interview with The Express Tribune, Dr. Shahzad Ali Khan, Vice Chancellor of the Health Services Academy (HSA), revealed that the National University of Public Health Sciences (NUPHS) is being established in Pakistan. Dr. Shahzad also mentioned that HSA was the first institute in Pakistan to offer Ph.D. and master’s in public health degrees in six distinct areas, and the number of students has grown from 23 to 750 since its inception.

Dr. Shahzad added that the PC-1 for the construction of a seven-story building on seven acres of land for HSA has been approved, and the development is set to begin this year. The plan is to construct institutions for all disciplines, similar to the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST).
During the COVID-19 pandemic, HSA worked with the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) and had 28 Ph.D.s on its staff. Dr. Shahzad praised the NCOC for its efforts in halting the progress of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country. However, he emphasized the importance of increased collaboration to eradicate polio, hepatitis, cancer, dengue, and other fatal diseases in Pakistan. HSA is supported by various sources, including tuition fees, donations, and funds from USAID and HEC, and provides Ph.D., Master’s, and BSc programs to both medical and non-medical students.
