Pakistan to Register Khewra Salt at Foreign Markets
After the Federal Cabinet approved the Pakistan Minerals Development Corporation (PMDC) as the registry of locally produced khewra salt, the Pakistan Intellectual Property Organization (IPO) initiated the registration process for the geographic (GI) for pink salt.

This will prevent Indian traders from marketing Pakistani rock salt as pink Himalayan salt. Khewra rock salt, after being marketed in the United Arab Emirates, was re-exported as Himalayan salt of Indian origin.
In this regard, the PMDC has completed the procedures for the registration of mineral salts with the Geographical Indications Registry (GI), after which the country will submit an application for registration in the foreign market.

According to PMDC officials, rock salt is not currently a lucrative commodity for export and Pakistan does not sell rock salt as a commercial and industrial commodity; however, after GI labeling in the international market, Pakistan will be able to enter into long-term sales contracts with foreign buyers. Most of the salt purchased by Indian traders in the United Arab Emirates is re-exported in attractive small packages at very high prices to the EU, USA and even the Far East, with labels for know this is a product of the Indian Himalayas.
