Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to accelerate the implementation of the Prime Minister’s Apna Ghar Scheme after banks approved housing finance worth Rs204 billion, with Rs27 billion already disbursed to beneficiaries.
Chairing a review meeting on the scheme, the prime minister said providing affordable housing to citizens remains one of the government’s key priorities. He said the initiative was designed to help low- and middle-income families purchase or build homes through accessible financing.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif instructed relevant authorities to speed up implementation and urged public and private sector banks to increase financing under the programme. He stressed that greater participation from financial institutions would be important for expanding the scheme’s reach.
The prime minister also called for a comprehensive strategy covering both vertical and horizontal housing projects. The approach is intended to increase affordable housing options and address the growing demand for homes in different parts of the country.
During the meeting, officials informed the prime minister that the Ministry of Housing and Works and the State Bank of Pakistan are conducting weekly reviews of the programme. The reviews are aimed at monitoring progress, identifying challenges, and removing implementation bottlenecks.
The latest financing figures indicate growing participation by banks in the government’s housing initiative. With Rs27 billion already released to beneficiaries, authorities are now seeking to accelerate the flow of financing to eligible applicants.
The government’s push toward both apartment-based and traditional housing projects could also expand the range of options available to families seeking homeownership. Vertical developments may help address land constraints in urban areas, while horizontal housing projects can support expansion in areas with greater land availability.
The government is expected to continue monitoring the scheme as banks and relevant authorities work to increase financing and improve implementation across the country.
