Islamabad: After Islamabad and Moscow last week inked a new deal to develop a gas pipeline from Karachi to Kasur, authorities cited, the prospects for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s first visit to Pakistan have improved.

The flagship project the two nations want to carry out ever since they made the decision to put their Cold War rivalry to rest and usher in a new era of bilateral relations is the North-South Gas Pipeline, which has now been rebranded as the Pakistan Steam Gas Pipeline.

Although the deal was first inked in 2015, the 1,122-kilometer-long pipeline’s construction could not begin because of potential US penalties on Russian enterprises and other factors.

Pakistan is eager for President Putin to officially launch the project’s groundbreaking, which might happen later this year or early next year.
