Punjab Government Allocates Rs. 150 Million to Revive National Hockey

The Punjab government has approved a Rs. 150 million grant for the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) as part of efforts to revive and strengthen the country’s national sport.

According to an official press release, the grant was sanctioned on the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif following a formal request submitted by the PHF.

The approval was granted during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee chaired by Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb. The meeting was attended by the Provincial Finance Minister, Secretary Finance, Secretary Sports, and other senior government officials.

The allocated funds will be used to support hockey development at the grassroots level, identify and nurture emerging talent, enhance coaching standards, improve technical expertise, and strengthen institutional capacity within the sport.

“On the direction of the Chief Minister of Punjab, the Government of Punjab has approved a grant of Rs. 150 million for the promotion of hockey at the grassroots level and for strengthening technical and coaching development across Pakistan,” the statement said.

The provincial government said the initiative reflects its commitment to restoring hockey’s former glory and promoting sports development nationwide. Once considered Pakistan’s most successful sport, hockey remains an important part of the country’s sporting heritage.

A spokesperson for the Pakistan Hockey Federation expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, and the provincial cabinet for extending timely support.

The federation added that the grant would help rebuild hockey infrastructure, improve performance standards, and create greater opportunities for young athletes aspiring to represent Pakistan on the international stage.
