Punjab Seeks $500M WB Loan for Rural Water Supply, Sanitation
In order to service the province’s 6.65 million residents, the Punjab administration is requesting $500 million from the World Bank to deliver water to rural regions and handle sanitary issues in 16 districts and tehsils.

The Punjab districts that are the poorest and have the worst results for child stunting, access to and quality of sanitation facilities, and bacterial contamination of drinking water at source and at point of use will be the focus of a World Bank-documented initiative.
The project will support Covid-19 mitigation efforts in rural Punjab through a variety of actions, with a focus on what households and communities can do to ensure physical separation and fundamental hygiene, small-scale infrastructure to directly encourage good hygiene practices, and improving employment opportunities for unskilled and semi-skilled labor.

A total of 2,000 villages, major settlements, and 8,500 small settlements are anticipated to be covered by the project in the districts of Khushab, Mianwali, Sargodha, Chakwal, Bhakkar, Pakpattan, Chiniot, Jhang, Rajanpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Lodhran, Bahawalpur, Muzaffargarh, Bahawalnagar, and Multan.

To monitor project implementation progress, WSS service delivery performance, the flow of public and donor money designated for WASH, related financial management data, and outcome indicators, the project will construct and employ a sophisticated IT-based management information system.
