The Punjab government has directed the Communication and Works (C&W) Department to complete the Rawalpindi–Murree–Kohala (RMK) Road Project by August, aiming to improve connectivity between Rawalpindi and Murree while reducing traffic congestion on the Murree Expressway.
The directive was issued by Punjab Minister for Communication and Works Malik Sohaib Ahmed Bharth during a site visit to review the project’s progress. The road scheme is a key component of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s Murree Development Plan.
Project Nears Completion
Accompanied by senior officials from the C&W Department, the minister inspected more than 31 kilometers of the under-construction road and reviewed both construction quality and project progress.
Officials informed him that the project has achieved approximately 60 percent physical completion, with the remaining work being carried out at an accelerated pace to meet the government’s deadline.
Improved Connectivity and Tourism
The minister instructed the department to ensure the project is completed on schedule while maintaining high engineering and construction standards.
Once completed, the RMK Road is expected to:
- Improve connectivity between Rawalpindi, Murree, and Kohala
- Reduce traffic pressure on the Murree Expressway
- Support tourism in the region
- Provide safer and more efficient travel for residents and visitors
Traffic Management During Construction
Construction work on sections of the RMK Road has temporarily diverted more vehicles onto the Murree Expressway, leading to increased traffic as tourist arrivals continue to rise.
To manage congestion, the City Traffic Police Murree has implemented a special traffic management plan by deploying additional personnel at major roads, intersections, and tourist hotspots.
Authorities have also advised motorists to use alternative routes where possible and follow traffic instructions to help maintain smooth traffic flow during the construction period.
