KARACHI: The Sindh government has awarded four major infrastructure projects worth approximately Rs. 8.5 billion to the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) as part of efforts to improve traffic flow, strengthen road connectivity and upgrade key transport infrastructure across Karachi.
According to Geo News, work on three of the projects is expected to formally begin in August, with the development package focusing on new flyovers, improvements at major intersections and rehabilitation of important roads across the city.
One of the key projects involves the construction of a flyover interchange near the Northern Bypass on the M-9 Motorway. The project is intended to improve connectivity between different parts of Karachi and help reduce congestion around the busy motorway corridor.
The proposed flyover will be constructed over the motorway, for which the Sindh Local Government Department has initiated the process of obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the National Highway Authority (NHA).
The project has an estimated cost of approximately Rs. 2.3 billion.
Another major component of the infrastructure package is a proposed flyover at the intersection connecting Abul Hasan Isphahani Road with the area opposite Al-Asif Square on the motorway.
With an estimated cost of around Rs. 2.1 billion, the project is expected to improve traffic movement from multiple directions and ease congestion at one of Karachi’s heavily used intersections.
The Sindh government has also approved a major road rehabilitation project on Hawksbay Road, with an estimated cost of approximately Rs. 4.162 billion.
Work on the Hawksbay Road project is expected to begin in August as part of the provincial government’s wider efforts to improve road infrastructure and connectivity in Karachi.
The projects form part of a broader infrastructure push aimed at addressing traffic congestion and improving the condition of major roads and intersections across the metropolitan city.
The involvement of FWO in the projects is expected to accelerate construction and rehabilitation work, while the proposed flyovers are intended to improve traffic movement at key congestion points.
As Karachi continues to experience rapid urban growth and increasing traffic volumes, large-scale investments in road infrastructure remain critical for improving mobility and strengthening connectivity between residential, commercial and industrial areas.
The newly awarded projects are expected to contribute to these efforts by targeting some of the city’s important transport corridors and high-traffic intersections.
