LHC Survey of 2 Proposed Sites about Trees Felling Underpasses
The Lahore High Court (LHC) ordered the judicial water commission to conduct studies of the locations of two planned underpasses, Karim Block in Allama Iqbal Town and Gulab Devi on Ferozepur Road, and determine whether it would be feasible to prevent the trees from being cut down.

This ruling was made by Justice Shahid Karim after he heard a public-interest case including many environmental problems. The Lahore Development Authority (LDA) was previously prohibited by the judge from cutting down trees for the two underpasses’ development.
The Orange Line Metro Train, the Firdous Market underpass, and the expansion of Canal Road are just a few of the city’s development projects that the lawyer said the LDA had already cut down more than 3,000 fully mature trees in addition to indigenous species.
He said that the government was not replanting the trees that were being cut down for various construction projects. He claimed that the court had earlier stopped the needless cutting down of the trees.

The judge instructed the commission to assess the project locations and determine if it would be feasible to replant the trees that would otherwise need to be cut down. The court postponed the remaining hearing for one week.
