Twitter is Trying to Cover Up Issues as “Routine Maintenance”
Once again, Elon Musk’s Twitter account has been hit by sudden software outages. A recent attempt at transparency has also left remaining employees feeling burdened.
On Wednesday, Twitter staff were informed that Slack was undergoing routine maintenance, which resulted in a deployment freeze. On the same day, Jira, the tool used by Twitter to monitor tasks, also stopped functioning. Consequently, the majority of engineers took the day off due to the lack of communication and work to do.
While Jira’s functionality was restored on Thursday, the explanation provided for Slack’s outage was incorrect, and it seems that Twitter intentionally shut off access rather than due to unpaid bills. The motive behind this remains unknown.

It’s possible that Musk may have a negative view of the app or wants to evaluate Twitter’s functioning without Slack and associated expenses. It’s worth noting that Musk’s Tesla uses Mattermost, a Slack competitor, for internal collaboration, as well as Microsoft Outlook and Teams for email and meetings.
The loss of these critical tools was met with a mix of shock, annoyance, and some satisfaction on the anonymous workplace chat app, Blind.
According to one employee’s post, “We didn’t pay our Slack bill. Now everyone is barely working. Penny wise, pound foolish.”
