World Bank Approves $100M for Literacy Programs in Sindh
The Board of Executive Directors of the World Bank approved $100 million in funding to assist Pakistan’s initiatives to raise literacy and student retention rates in the province of Sindh.
The Sindh Early Learning Enhancement through Classroom Transformation (SELECT) project will assist the provincial administration in increasing expenditures on primary education in underserved and distant communities.

The project will concentrate on improving primary-level pupils’ reading and comprehension abilities, which are crucial for early learning. A flexible educational system will be implemented as part of the project to better handle interruptions in the classroom and prevent dropouts in the future.
It also intends to assist teachers in putting in place a new student attendance tracking system so they can take proactive steps to raise retention and reading rates.

The International Development Association (IDA), the low-interest division of the World Bank Group, provided a credit to fund the project. A further $55 million will be provided as a grant from the Global Partnership for Education, which seeks to hasten the achievement of gender equality and universal primary education.
