World Bank Suggests Building a New Port in Balochistan
Earlier, a news source said that the World Bank (WB) advocated the development of a new port city at Sonmiani Bay to accommodate the country’s expanding cargo demand and capacity improvement.
The World Bank has been informed that Sindh will provide plots to 6,500 displaced households.
Karachi Ports Supply and Demand Assessment is a study paper that examined four potential options for enhancing port capacity and addressing the anticipated 129% increase in cargo handling demand over the next two decades.
In its study, the WB recommended that the government construct a $300 million elevated highway connecting Northern Highways to Karachi Port. It would meet the short-term objective of redirecting traffic away from the city’s core and will also relieve pressure on the major roadways.
Port Qasim might be developed with a budget of $500 million to improve cargo flow and relieve congestion on Karachi Port.

The study emphasizes the creation of a brand-new port at Sonmiani Bay at the cost of USD 9.6 billion, which will be able to handle all port-related issues for the foreseeable future.
In addition, the analysis revealed that the project would be a substantial infrastructure endeavor that would face difficulties in policy formulation and land-related issues.
