Sindh Plans New Logistics Park in Karachi as SMTA Seeks Cabinet Approval

KARACHI: The Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) has moved forward with a proposal to establish a logistics park in Karachi, with technical and administrative work being completed before the project is placed before the Sindh Cabinet for approval.

The proposal was reviewed during an SMTA board meeting chaired by Sindh Senior Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon. The board also reviewed plans for the procurement of 500 electric buses as part of wider efforts to improve the province’s transport infrastructure.

Logistics Park Intended to Ease Heavy Traffic

The proposed logistics park is being presented primarily as a way to reduce the pressure created by heavy vehicles on Karachi’s road network.

A dedicated facility could provide a more organised location for freight-related operations and help shift some heavy vehicle activity away from congested urban areas.

However, details regarding the park’s proposed site, land requirements and overall development model have not yet been finalised.

Proposal Follows Earlier Northern Bypass Plans

The latest proposal comes after SMTA approved plans in May 2026 for a modern heavy vehicle terminal outside Karachi along the Northern Bypass.

That earlier initiative was intended to accommodate trucks, trailers and other heavy vehicles currently operating within the city. It also included plans for a dedicated heavy vehicle route linking Karachi Port with the Northern Bypass.

There appears to be a potential connection between the earlier heavy vehicle terminal concept and the newly reviewed logistics park, particularly because both initiatives address the movement and management of freight traffic. However, authorities have not publicly confirmed whether the two proposals are part of the same project or separate initiatives.

Cabinet Approval Still Pending

The logistics park has not yet received final approval from the Sindh Cabinet.

According to the board-level discussions, technical and administrative procedures are still being completed before the proposal can be submitted for consideration.

As a result, the project should currently be viewed as a proposal rather than a fully approved or funded development.

The total project cost, exact location, land area, construction schedule and implementation arrangements have not been disclosed.

Electric Bus Procurement Also Reviewed

Alongside the logistics park, the SMTA board considered the purchase of 500 electric buses.

The proposal is part of broader efforts to expand and modernise public transport services in Sindh. The technical and administrative process for the bus procurement is also being advanced before submission to the provincial cabinet.

Final procurement terms, delivery schedules and deployment locations have yet to be confirmed.

Potential Impact on Commercial and Logistics Activity

If the logistics park receives approval and moves into development, its eventual location could influence demand for warehouses, freight yards, transport facilities and related commercial services in surrounding areas.

A dedicated freight facility could also affect traffic patterns by concentrating heavy vehicle operations within a planned zone rather than allowing them to remain dispersed across Karachi’s urban road network.

The scale of these potential effects, however, will depend on the final location, operating model and extent to which heavy vehicles are redirected to the facility.

What to Watch Next

The immediate milestone for the proposal is consideration by the Sindh Cabinet. A cabinet decision followed by the announcement of a confirmed site would provide greater clarity about the project’s scope and implementation timeline.

Until those details are finalised, businesses, property stakeholders and investors should avoid treating any particular location or development schedule as confirmed.

The relationship between the proposed logistics park and the previously approved Northern Bypass heavy vehicle terminal will also become clearer through future official announcements.
