Arab League Readmits Syria After 12 Years of Absence
The Arab League, comprising the Palestine Liberation Organization and nations from the Middle East and Africa, aims to foster closer political, economic, cultural, and social ties among its members.
Syria, which had been absent for 11 years, has been readmitted to the league after an unusual meeting at its headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, as announced on Sunday. The re-entry is effective immediately.
“Syria becomes a full member of the Arab League as of this evening, and as of tomorrow, they are eligible to attend all meetings. Assad can go when the host country, in this case Saudi Arabia, sends the invitation, if he wants to,” said Gheit.

While symbolic, the move carries the risk of aiding Assad’s international rehabilitation and possibly leading to the lifting of crippling sanctions against his regime. Syria has been subjected to severe Western sanctions for years, including the US’s 2019 Caesar Act, which imposed extensive penalties and prohibited any economic activity that supported Assad’s war effort.

The entire economy became untouchable as a result. According to the World Food Program, over 12 million Syrians, or more than half of the country’s population, are expected to experience food insecurity by 2022. The United Nations reports that Syrians are now experiencing poverty and food insecurity at levels that were previously unheard of.
