ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has started work on an 8.5-kilometre road along the eastern side of Islamabad Expressway, a project that could also introduce a new commercial corridor modeled on the capital’s Blue Area.
The six-lane road will replace the existing service road and connect Faizabad with Gulberg Green. The project includes a flyover connecting the new road with Islamabad Expressway at Faizabad and an underpass at the intersection of Letrar Road and Khanna Bridge.
CDA Plans New Commercial Hub
As part of the project, the CDA’s planning wing is considering a dedicated commercial strip along the road, with the potential to develop it as a Blue Area-type commercial centre.
The authority expects the proposed commercial area to generate billions of rupees through the future auction of commercial plots, while creating new opportunities for businesses and investors.
Construction Work Accelerated
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi recently visited the project site and directed the CDA to accelerate construction, with instructions to complete the work within a few months rather than the one-year period initially outlined in the PC-I.
The CDA awarded the project to M/s Leimar, which submitted a bid approximately 13% below the project’s PKR 6 billion tender estimate.
Officials said the road survey has been completed, while clearing activities and shifting of utility services are currently underway before major construction work begins.
Potential Impact on Islamabad and Rawalpindi
The road is expected to improve connectivity for numerous residential communities and reduce traffic pressure on Islamabad Expressway.
If completed as planned, the project could improve travel between Islamabad and Rawalpindi while also creating a new commercial growth corridor.
The proposed commercial strip could further increase the area’s investment significance by bringing together commercial activity, improved road infrastructure and growing residential demand.
The interior minister has directed authorities to maintain speed, quality and transparency throughout the project.
