Contract Awarded for Tarbela Extension Project
Lahore: Water and Electricity Development Authority (Wapda) awarded a contract worth $354.6 million for civil works in the 5th Tarbela Extension Hydroelectric Project with a capacity of 1 530 megawatts to Construction Corporation China Power Construction (PCCCL).

The contract is awarded by international competitive bidding.
Speaking at the contract signing ceremony, Wapda President Muzammil Hussain said that in order to improve water storage capacity and the rate of cheap and clean hydel power generation in the national power grid, Wapda is building 10 projects, including Tarbela’s 5th extension.
The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), the lending arm of the World Bank Group, is providing $390 million for the program while the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is expanding grants to $300 million.

The project, which is expected to start generating electricity in mid-2024, will provide 1.347 billion units of low-cost hydel electricity annually to the national grid. 5th Expansion Project Manager Tarbela Muhammad Azam Joya and Pakistan Fire and Rescue Operations Representative Ling Jianke signed the contract on behalf of their respective organizations.
