The federal government has approved a major reform package aimed at addressing long-standing imbalances in Pakistan’s power sector, particularly disparities in electricity transmission and system charges across different regions.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet, chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb.

Under the new framework, electricity transmission and network usage charges will be standardized nationwide, applying equally to all power distribution companies, including K-Electric. The move is designed to ensure uniform treatment of consumers and eliminate regional cost differences that have persisted for years.

The ECC also approved steps to enhance efficiency in the power sector and promote a more competitive, market-based electricity trading system.

In addition, measures were endorsed to support stable energy supply for industry. This includes approving gas allocation for the revival of National Steel Complex Limited, which will be allowed to use gas for both industrial operations and captive power generation, subject to availability and applicable tariffs.

The committee further instructed relevant authorities to adopt a more consistent and standardized approach in future energy-related decisions to ensure policy alignment across the sector.
