The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has expanded its investigation into alleged academic and financial irregularities at Gomal University after more than 500 degrees were found to be suspicious during an official review.
According to the Higher Education Department, the inquiry began after the university administration reported possible irregularities that allegedly occurred between 2019 and 2023.
Initial findings led to the suspension of a former Director of Affiliations. Authorities have also started disciplinary proceedings against a former Controller of Examinations as part of the ongoing investigation.
Officials reviewing university records identified 514 questionable degrees, which have now been recommended for cancellation pending further examination.
To ensure a thorough review, the provincial government has formed a new inquiry committee tasked with conducting a detailed investigation into the matter. The committee will also examine allegations of financial mismanagement within the university.
Provincial Minister for Higher Education Mina Khan Afridi said the government is committed to taking the investigation to its conclusion and holding accountable anyone found responsible for issuing irregular degrees or causing financial losses to the institution.
He stated that the government is working to strengthen oversight and accountability across public sector universities to maintain academic standards and protect students’ interests.
The minister added that efforts are being made to eliminate corruption and malpractice in higher education institutions while restoring public confidence in the credibility and value of university qualifications throughout the province.
The investigation remains ongoing, and further action is expected once the inquiry committee submits its findings.
