Karachi Nullas Cleared of Encroachments by 98%: KMC
Bashir Siddiqui, the senior director of the Anti-Encroachment Department of the Karachi Municipal Corporation (KMC), revealed that the anti-encroachment drive along the storm water drains of Gujjar and Orangi Nullah is 98% complete, according to news sources.

In this context, the Supreme Court (SC) will soon receive an update report. According to the source, the KMC has established ten anti-encroachment squads.
Security officers and anti-encroachment teams collaborate to protect the safety of individuals. In January 2021, the anti-encroachment campaign began in Manzoor Colony and dismantled 250 illegal concrete constructions.
According to the studies, 3,100 concrete buildings have been constructed near Gujjar Nullah, while 2,100 houses have been constructed close Orangi Nullah and should be demolished. To minimize urban floods, the university of Nadirshaw Edulji Dinshaw (NED) recommends demolishing around 5,000 concrete structures situated above storm water drains.

Importantly, the anti-encroachment campaign was initiated last year on the Supreme Court’s directives, after the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) submitted its report. The NDMA developed the report in reaction to the city’s catastrophic urban flooding, which took a large number of lives and inundated a significant area of the city.
