KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is moving to make its land, property, development and financial information accessible online as part of a broader effort to improve transparency and public access to municipal records.
Mayor Murtaza Wahab announced the initiative, saying new sections have been added to the KMC website covering information about municipal properties and assets, development projects, the Karachi Development Map and the Land Record Management System.
Digital Access to Municipal Land Records
The new online system is intended to reduce reliance on physical files and direct visits to government offices when seeking information about KMC-owned land and properties.
According to the mayor, citizens should be able to determine which properties belong to KMC and access information about development work being carried out across Karachi.
The planned information also includes details such as the cost of development projects, executing institutions or contractors, and the funding sources being used for individual schemes.
Initiative Linked to Greater Land Transparency
The move comes amid increased attention to the verification and management of municipal land.
KMC has previously undertaken reviews concerning the ownership and legal status of specific properties. The corporation has also taken departmental action following inquiries into alleged irregularities involving land allotments and mutations.
Making relevant records available online could provide a more systematic way for the public to review municipal property information rather than relying exclusively on individual inquiries or physical documentation.
Wider Digital Reforms Underway
The land-record initiative forms part of a broader digitalisation programme at KMC.
The mayor said employee records have been shifted to the SAP enterprise management system, with the aim of improving record management and reducing the risk of duplicate or fraudulent payments.
KMC is also introducing an electronic account-to-account payment mechanism intended to create a more traceable record of payments made from the corporation’s accounts.
The corporation plans to digitally link its revenue and receivables as well, allowing financial collections to be recorded and monitored through a centralised system.
Digitalisation Shows Early Revenue Impact
According to the mayor, digitalisation has already contributed to improved revenue collection in at least one KMC department.
Monthly collections in that department had previously remained around Rs. 17–18 crore, but recently reached approximately Rs. 30 crore in a month.
The figures provide an indication of the potential financial benefits of moving municipal records and transactions into more structured digital systems, although the wider impact will depend on the implementation of these reforms across KMC departments.

While KMC has announced the new online facilities, the full scope of records immediately available to the public has not been clearly detailed.
