New Verification Method Launched by NADRA for Old Citizens
ISLAMABAD, January 18, 2023- NADRA launched a new verification method to facilitate the old citizens.
The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) is launching a new service named “Tasdeeq” to authenticate the IDs of old people whose fingerprints cannot be read by biometric scanners. This program, primarily intended for banking purposes but with potential for other uses, intends to answer complaints from senior individuals who have trouble authenticating their identities due to age-related alterations in their fingerprints. According to NADRA, the initiative “envisages alternative identification verification for over sixty citizens.” In order to circumvent biometrics, Chairman Muhammad Tariq Malik declared that the identity verification process will involve individuals answering personal questions using AI technology.

Three personal questions will be asked in two attempts. To properly prove their identity and avoid biometric verification, individuals must answer all three questions correctly on at least one of their two attempts. Five banks, including MCB, Allied Bank, Bank Al Falah, Bank of Khyber, and Soneri Bank, already support the project, while additional institutions, including National Bank, Askari Bank, First Women Bank Limited, and Khushali Bank, are undergoing final testing.

It is uncertain whether additional banks will embrace the Tasdeeq service or when it will be rolled out to industries other than banking. This facility was established in response to challenges in acquiring fingerprint biometrics from senior citizens and laborers in Pakistan during the distribution of emergency assistance in 2020. NADRA recently delivered 17,600 tablets to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics for a digital census effort and implemented a new biometric patient ID verification system to promote transparency in hospital organ collection and transplantation.
