Pakistan Offers ‘Huge Potential’ for Gandhara Tourism
Pakistan, with its distinctive fusion of ancient history and the Buddha’s teachings of peace and compassion, the world, according to President Dr. Arif Alvi, has a wonderful window into the Gandhara civilisation.
In his speech at the three-day Gandhara Symposium 2023, he stated, “In today’s world, where hatred is on the rise and growing polarisation is fueling conflicts, it’s time to rediscover the role of cultural diplomacy to promote dialogue among civilisations.”

The Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, government of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and the Prime Minister’s Task Force on Gandhara Tourism organised the symposium, which was titled “Cultural Diplomacy: Reviving Gandhara Civilization and Buddhist Heritage in Pakistan.”
The purpose of the gathering, which included monks and interfaith experts from countries including Sri Lanka, Nepal, Thailand, China, Malaysia, South Korea, and Vietnam, was to investigate Pakistan’s rich Buddhist heritage and foster an environment that would support Gandhara tourism.

Ramesh Kumar Vankwani, Minister of State and Chairman of the PM Task Force on Gandhara Tourism, stated that the Gandhara civilisation continues to fascinate people from all over the world and emphasised the importance of preserving and reviving the ancient Buddhist artefacts.
He asserted that cultural diplomacy promoted tradition and understanding across civilizations and expressed optimism that the symposium would serve as a useful forum for promoting Pakistan’s history.

“Gandhara Civilization: Celebrating Pakistan’s Buddhist Heritage” was the topic of Session II. The presenters, who included professionals, religious figures, and academics, stressed the importance of Pakistan’s Buddhist Gandhara history. Pakistan is a crossroads of civilizations and has a rich cultural heritage.
In Session III, the topic of “Promoting Tourism: Creating an Enabling Environment” was covered in depth. Speakers were invited from Pakistan’s think tanks and tourism business.
Last but not least, a Round Table discussion on “Gandhara Civilization: Opportunities and Challenges” was held with a panel of religious experts, scholars, curators, religion leaders, and other stakeholders. The following were some of the points raised at the round table: Pakistan is a safe destination for tourists, and this symposium effectively transmits the necessary message. Pakistan will launch Gandhara Tourism and is prepared to work with other nations to improve B2B and P2P exchanges.
