Policy Finalized to Generate Power From Solid Waste in Karachi
According to news sources, the Energy Department of Karachi has finalized the Waste-to-Energy Policy 2021 after companies approached the provincial government about generating energy and gas from waste in Jam Chakro.
According to the information provided, Energy Minister Imtiaz Shaikh presided over a meeting during which the policy’s goals and objectives were addressed. It was revealed that the companies would first generate 150 megawatts (MW) of electricity from the city’s garbage. In the meeting, the objectives and goals of the policy were discussed.
According to the general director of the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB), there are two landfill sites: 450 acres in Gond Pass and 500 acres near Jam Chakra.

Daily, 10,000 tonnes of garbage are generated in the city. The participants were advised that 200 MW of energy might be created from the garbage. In addition, the managing director indicated that the distribution company, which has a grid station nearby, can simply receive power from Jam Chakro.
Minister Imtiaz Shaikh remarked that the administration’s primary objective was to clean up Karachi’s garbage by converting it into electricity. The Waste-to-Energy Policy will be submitted to the provincial cabinet for approval at the next meeting, he continued.
