Punjab Issues Advisory to Curtail Risks Posed by Smog
An advertising in the main newspaper states, “Lahore: The Punjab administration has informed citizens of the harmful and deadly impacts of the current smog disaster in the province, and citizens have been asked to take further precautions in this regard.”
According to the advertising, the provincial government has declared SMOG to be a natural disaster under the Punjab National Calamity (Prevention and Relief) Act of 1958. The public service announcement recommended citizens to take the following precautions:
- Wear a mask when heading outside.
- Utilize eye protection and spectacles
- Frequent hand- and eye-washing is encouraged
- Close windows and doors and use air purifiers for clean indoor air.
- Limit the unnecessary travel of vulnerable populations, such as children and the elderly.
- In cases of influenza, nausea, cough, and shortness of breath, consult a physician.
In addition, the advertisement warned of the possible legal consequences of disregarding environmental protection measures. The advertising also cautioned against the use of automobiles that release smoke, the burning of stubble, the failure to install zigzag technology on brick kilns, and the use of ineffective emission control systems in industrial systems.
It has been confirmed that offenders will face FIRs, hefty punishments, and imprisonment. In this regard, the government has established a SMOG monitoring control unit within the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab Control Room. The public is instructed to report any infractions to the helpline number 1129.
