Sindh Allocates PKR 2.24tr Budget for Fiscal Year 2023-24

Karachi: According to information reported in a top publication on June 10, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, who also serves as Finance Minister, presented the budget for the fiscal year 2023–24 in the Sindh Assembly with a total outlay of PKR 2.24 trillion.

According to the specifics, the CM promised a 35% salary rise for Sindh government employees in grades 1 through 16, and a 30% salary increase for those in grades 17 through 22. The minimum salary will increase from PKR 25,000 to about PKR 35,550, while pensions will be hiked by 17.5%.

The following are the budget’s main allocations for 2023–24:

  • Education has received a budget of PKR 312 billion.
  • For health, PKR 214 billion has been made aside.
  • Irrigation has been given PKR 25.70 billion.
  • Law and Order will receive PKR 143 billion.
  • The IT Sector has been allotted PKR 1.24 billion.
  • There is PKR 23.47 billion set aside for works and services.
  • The Transportation sector has been allotted PKR 13.4 billion.
  • Fish and livestock will each receive PKR 10 billion.
  • The budget for Social Welfare and Protection is PKR 5.69 billion.
  • Local Councils have been given PKR 88 billion.

The provincial government has also chosen to rationalise a number of tax bases in order to shield the economically disadvantaged groups from needless financial constraints. To raise money, this proposal taxes the privileged sector while also reducing compliance costs and delivering tax relief to both individuals and corporations.

The expected overall budget for development is PKR 689 billion, of which 380 billion are set aside for the Annual Development Programme (ADP) and 410 billion are allocated for development initiatives. In addition, the government intends to provide fare subsidies for the Sindh Intra District Peoples Bus and allocate PKR 13.4 billion, or 92% more than the previous budget, to the transportation industry.

With PKR 353 billion, the Education Department would be able to hire 1,500 lecturers through the Sindh Public Service Commission. The budget also allocates money for the rebuilding of schools devastated by flooding, grants for public universities, and the building of new colleges.
