Traders in Rawalpindi have called on the Government of Punjab to revise smart lockdown timings, saying early market closures are hurting businesses and creating inconvenience for the public.
Traders’ Key Demands
Speaking at a press conference at the Rawalpindi Press Club, representatives of the Central Association of Traders outlined several demands:
- Extend shop closing time from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm
- Allow hotels and restaurants to operate until midnight
- Reduce petroleum prices to ease business costs
Concerns Over Current Timings
Traders argued that the current schedule was designed for winter months, when evenings start earlier. With summer temperatures rising, most people prefer shopping after sunset.
They highlighted several issues:
- Customers struggle due to early market closures
- Office workers cannot shop after work hours
- Businesses are facing noticeable financial losses
Warning of Protests
The traders warned that if their concerns are not addressed, they may launch protests across Rawalpindi and other parts of Punjab.
They urged authorities to reconsider the policy and adopt a more flexible approach that supports both public convenience and economic activity, especially during the ongoing heatwave season.
