US President Donald Trump has announced a three-day ceasefire in the ongoing Russia–Ukraine conflict through a post on Truth Social, covering May 9, 10, and 11.

The announcement marks the first formal ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine since the war began nearly four years ago following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The temporary pause in hostilities is expected to align with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations while also serving as a symbolic period of reflection for Ukraine.

According to the statement, the agreement includes:

  • A full suspension of active military operations
  • A prisoner swap involving 1,000 detainees from each side
  • Continued diplomatic negotiations aimed at reaching a broader peace agreement

Trump said the breakthrough came after direct discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, claiming both leaders agreed to temporarily halt fighting.

He described the development as a potentially historic moment and suggested it could become “the beginning of the end” of the war, which he referred to as the largest global conflict since World War II.

Talks between both sides are reportedly continuing, with efforts underway to expand the temporary ceasefire into a longer-term peace arrangement.
