Google Drive Limits File Storage Without Warning
Google has imposed a strict limit on the number of files that can be saved on a single Google Drive account, surprising users.

Those who exceeded the limit were unable to submit additional files and were left to troubleshoot the issue on their own because Google provided no warning.
One Reddit member awoke to the following message: “Please delete 2 million files in order to continue using your Google Drive account.”
This is also not a fresh change; the error has been present since February. This month, the error message was changed to “Error 403: This account has surpassed the 5 million item creation limit.” To make more things, move existing ones to the trash and permanently delete them.”

A Google representative verified to Ars Technica that the file limit is intentional and not a bug. The 5 million file limit is “a safeguard to prevent misuse of our system in a manner that may have an effect on the system’s stability and safety.”
Only Affects a Few Users
According to Google, the file limit refers to “the number of items an individual user can generate within any given Drive,” rather than the total number of files within a Drive.
Although this distinction may not be important for individual users, it may be for those who share storage across multiple accounts.

Google has also mentioned that the vast majority of users will be unaffected, with only a small percentage affected.
Still Unfair
Even if Google says that the limit is justified, the company’s decision to impose it on its users without previous notice is unacceptable.
Google should have informed paying customers about this change in advance via email, blog posts, and pop-up warnings in the Drive user interface, and given several months’ notice before implementing the change.

This abrupt shift is especially perplexing for Workspace business customers, who pay for a more reliable version of Google’s services and anticipate a more gradual rollout of updates.
