The Punjab government has set March 30, 2027, as the target completion date for the Gujranwala Mass Transit Project, commonly known as the Gujranwala Yellow Line.

The timeline was confirmed by the project’s director in a recent progress update. The mass transit system is being developed to provide a modern and efficient public transport network across the city.

31.5km Route to Link Gakhar and Aimanabad

The Yellow Line will span approximately 31.5 kilometres, connecting Gakhar with Aimanabad while passing through key residential, commercial, and industrial areas of Gujranwala.

The revised project design was approved by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz in May 2026. The plan also includes feeder bus services to improve connectivity between surrounding neighborhoods and the main transit corridor.

Underground Sections and 24 Stations

Under the updated design, the government has approved the construction of two tunnel sections, with 17 to 19 kilometres of the route planned to run underground to minimize traffic disruption.

The project will feature 24 stations, including two underground stations, to facilitate passenger movement across the city.

Three Depots and Solar-Powered Infrastructure

Three operational depots will be established at:

  • Gharjakh
  • Chand Da Qila
  • Gondlanwala

Officials said all stations and depots will be equipped with solar power systems, while a dedicated command and control center will oversee operations, passenger services, and security.

Drainage Network Included

The project also incorporates a 62-kilometre drainage system along both sides of the transit corridor to improve stormwater management and reduce urban flooding during heavy rainfall.

Cost and Expected Benefits

The Gujranwala Yellow Line was initially announced with an estimated cost of Rs. 62.7 billion. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz inaugurated the project in December 2025.

The system will operate using 36 electric buses powered by green energy and is expected to serve approximately 51,000 passengers daily. Officials noted that the final project cost may increase due to the addition of underground sections and other design modifications.

Construction in Progress

Construction work is currently underway on the main corridor, depots, underpasses, and supporting road infrastructure.

Once completed, the Gujranwala Metro Bus project is expected to improve urban mobility, reduce traffic congestion, and provide residents with a modern, environmentally friendly public transport system.
