The Peshawar High Court (Peshawar High Court) has asked the government to submit a detailed report on rising cases of rat bites and associated health risks in Peshawar and nearby areas.

The case was heard by a two-member bench comprising Justice Waqar Ahmad and Justice Babar Sattar during proceedings on a public interest petition concerning public health and safety.

During the hearing, petitioner Saifullah Mohib Kakakhel informed the court that repeated rat attacks have caused significant distress to families, with reports of children being among the victims. He submitted newspaper reports, complaints, and supporting documents to underline the severity of the situation.

The petitioner’s counsel argued that the issue goes beyond isolated incidents and represents a serious public health and humanitarian concern affecting a wider segment of society. The court was urged to direct immediate action from relevant authorities to prevent further harm, particularly to children.

Justice Waqar Ahmad observed during the proceedings that diseases such as Hantavirus, which can be transmitted through rodents, add to the seriousness of the situation and require urgent attention from public health authorities.

Terming the matter a grave public health concern, the court directed the government and relevant departments to submit a comprehensive response within two weeks. It also instructed the court office to fix the next hearing for June 15, 2026.
