Milk Exports Have Drastically Fallen in Last 2 Years

The export of milk has significantly reduced during the last two years, according to information provided to the Senate Standing Committee on Commerce.

Senator Zeeshan Khanzada presided over the Wednesday meeting of the parliamentary panel. The Senate Committee discussed the export regulations for milk and other palatable foods.

According to the Economic Survey 2021–22, which was presented to the Committee by Muhammad Sualeh Ahmed Faruqui, Secretary for the Ministry of Commerce, Pakistan is the fourth-largest producer of milk in the world, with a consumption rate of 52,996 million tonnes.

Yet, he continued, milk exports have significantly declined during the previous two years. Senator Zeeshan Khanzada noted that despite milk prices rising quickly, the government still permits its export. In response to price fluctuations, the government cannot cap milk exports, according to the secretary of the ministry of commerce.

Also, the Senate body received a briefing on the government’s plan for the development of the meat industry. According to the deputy chairman of the Senate, Mirza Muhammad Afridi, around 150,000 cows and lambs are killed each day in the nation, and the government should start importing meat from Afghanistan to reduce meat costs and meet the nation’s export demand.

The government is reluctant to import due to the impending threat of cow viral disease in Afghanistan, Muhammad Sualeh Ahmed Faruqui retorted.

Furthermore, according to Senator Saleem Mandviwalla, Pakistan imports petroleum worth Rs. 12 billion. In order to lower the nation’s import costs, he continued, energy-efficient strategies must be urgently developed in the current economic climate. In order to address the issue, the chairman of the committee suggested that a special committee made up of senators from the Senate Standing Committee on Industries and Production, Finance and Revenue, and Commerce be established.

Senators Fida Muhammad, Saleem Mandviwalla, Danesh Kumar, Mohammad Abdul Qadir, Deputy Chairman of the Senate Mirza Muhammad Afridi, Secretary for the Ministry of Commerce Muhammad Sualeh Ahmed Faruqui, and other senior executives from pertinent departments also attended the meeting.
