According to news sources, on Tuesday, the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) requested an immediate special package for the city’s elevation as well as a war footing for the improvement of peace and order.

To capitalize on the rise of the IT sector, the chamber requested the federal government to create a technology park in Karachi.

In a statement, KCCI President Muhammad Idrees criticized the federal government for ignoring Karachi. “The city continues to suffer significantly from deteriorating infrastructure, a lack of gas, electricity, and water, and a rise in lawlessness,” he said.

The statement reads, “KCCI has been sending letters to all federal ministers on a regular basis in order to invite them to the chamber for discussing Karachi-related issues and formulating a war-footing plan of action. Unfortunately, none of these federal ministers have the time to devote to Karachi, which has been abandoned like an orphan.”

According to the statement, the KCCI suggested that the federal government provide about 1,250 acres in Port Qasim to KCCI in September 2021 for the development of a Textile City, but the land was instead allocated to the Ministry of Maritime Affairs.

Prime Minister Imran Khan was requested by the president of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) to devote special attention to the port city and direct all federal ministries to take an active role in resolving the challenges. Mr. Idrees was concerned that the land would be sold to uninterested parties at inflated prices.

While street crimes were reported from all throughout the city, Federal Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed never bothered to visit Karachi, according to the head of the KCCI.

“The infrastructure of the city of Karachi has deteriorated to the point where many of the roads, especially those in the industrial zones, are not comfortable to travel on,” he continued.

The statement further noted that Karachi generated over 65 percent of national revenue, 95 percent to the fund, and 54 percent to exports. Nevertheless, Karachi has been deprived of basic amenities. The fourteen MNAs of the PTI pay no attention to the improvement of the city.
