RAWALPINDI: Owners of small residential properties in Rawalpindi are reportedly receiving property tax bills of up to Rs300,000 under recent enforcement by the Punjab Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department.
According to the reported figures, some owners of 2 to 4 marla houses have received demands ranging from around Rs150,000 to Rs300,000. In some cases, properties have reportedly been sealed over unpaid tax dues.
The development follows changes in the application of property tax exemptions. Houses measuring up to five marlas had previously benefited from an exemption in the province. The latest enforcement has brought some smaller residential properties into the tax collection process.

Officials have linked the increased enforcement to efforts to improve property tax collection. Larger properties, commercial areas and housing societies are among the categories where authorities have been seeking to strengthen recovery.
The new demands could have a direct financial impact on owners of smaller houses. Property owners receiving such notices may need to review the assessed property details, applicable tax rules and payment requirements before taking further action.
The reported sealing of properties also highlights the consequences of outstanding tax liabilities. Owners who believe a demand is incorrect can seek clarification from the relevant Excise and Taxation office and check the procedure available for reviewing or disputing an assessment.

The situation may also draw attention from homeowners in other parts of Punjab. Any extension of similar enforcement would depend on the applicable provincial rules and decisions by the relevant authorities.
For buyers and existing homeowners, the development underlines the importance of checking outstanding property taxes and applicable exemptions when evaluating residential properties. Tax liabilities can vary based on property characteristics, location and the rules in force at the time.
