An 88-year-old retired art teacher in New York has sold a painting for $254,000 (around Rs. 7 crore) after her family used Google Gemini to uncover its potential value.
The artwork, which had been hanging on her wall for nearly six decades, was originally purchased by Helene Plotkin in 1966 from a thrift store in White Plains, New York, for less than $100. At the time, it was simply an attractive piece she chose for her home, with no idea of its historical or financial significance.
How Google Gemini Changed Everything
The discovery happened last December when her son, Barry Plotkin, decided to take a closer look at the painting. He photographed the artwork and uploaded it to Google Gemini, asking the AI tool to identify it.
Gemini analyzed the visual characteristics of the painting, including its bold brushwork and distinctive orange tones, and suggested it could be linked to F.C.B. Cadell, a prominent Scottish Colourist artist from the 1920s.
The AI system also recommended that the family consult professional art appraisers for verification.
Experts Confirm Rare Artwork
Following the AI suggestion, specialists at the auction house Lyon & Turnbull examined the painting and confirmed that it was indeed created by F.C.B. Cadell.
While Gemini reportedly misidentified some details about the subject matter of the painting, it correctly pointed toward the artist, which proved crucial in guiding the valuation process.
Once authenticated, the artwork was auctioned and sold for $254,000, turning a forgotten thrift store purchase into a life-changing discovery.
A Family’s Unexpected Windfall
For Helene Plotkin, the moment was both emotional and surprising. After living with the painting for nearly 60 years, she never imagined it would carry such value.
Following the sale, she expressed a simple wish: that the painting one day be displayed publicly so her grandchildren—and others—can appreciate it.
What began as an ordinary home decoration has now become a remarkable example of how modern AI tools and expert verification can uncover hidden cultural and financial value in unexpected places.
