UAE Residents Can Travel to Hong Kong for Free
To promote tourism in Hong Kong, the government has launched a campaign called ‘Hello Hong Kong’ and is offering 500,000 free plane tickets to travellers from around the world. The initiative is a response to a decline in tourism due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to the free tickets, the government is also offering various goodies and vouchers to entice visitors to experience the city’s diverse culture.
The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Algernon Yau Ying Wah, has extended an invitation to residents of the UAE to participate in the campaign. Those who purchase tickets from Dubai will be given free return tickets after the tourism board’s approval.

Hong Kong is spending over $254 million on the campaign and hopes to attract many travellers from the UAE and the Middle East. Before the pandemic, the city received around 56 million tourists per year, but the number plummeted to 100,000 by 2022. Three airlines, Cathay Pacific, HK Express, and Hong Kong Airlines, will provide the free tickets. Interested travellers can enrol in the flight ticket lottery on the ‘World of Winners’ portal on Hong Kong Airport’s website starting from 1 March. The tickets will be given out in three phases, beginning on 1 March in Southeast Asia, 1 April in China, and 1 May in the rest of the world.
